Say what you will about what I’m about to share with you in the Small Business Deals: March 2026 Edition post.
I want to let it off my chest, given how important this issue is for me as a fiction author.
As you can see here, I’m currently reading a book in exchange for the review on Goodreads.
The book is certainly not in the genre I usually read.
But I agreed to review the book, anyway, since the premise somehow reminded me of the manga I used to read.
And guess what?
The book isn’t what I expected, not in a good way.
As an author, I understand the feeling of not wanting to box our book in a specific genre or trope, thinking it won’t be unique if we do.
But the issue with this thinking is that you end up betraying the readers’ expectations.
They want something unique, of course, but it shouldn’t stray too far from the expectations and tropes associated with that genre.
All I can say is this – it’s fine to have a twist of your own.
But you still need to meet the readers’ expectations regardless.
And if you need help in this department, then this month’s Small Business Deals: March 2026 Edition post will come in handy for you.
Book research made easy with Publisher Rocket
It’s no secret here that I use Publisher Rocket to optimize my book pages on Amazon and see the overall trend in the thriller genre.
But Publisher Rocket is a handy tool for conducting book research, too.
Let’s say you want to write a sci-fi novel and you already have a rough idea of what the story will be.
You can always go to Amazon and learn as much as you can about the genre of the book you’re about to write.
But that’s just about it.
You don’t know how the same genre will perform over time, and how frequently new books are being published in that genre.
And not to mention the breakdown between the books published by the big publishers and indie authors.
The good news is you don’t have to use sorcery to get this information, thanks to Publisher Rocket.
Not only do you know the best search terms you can use to optimize your book pages and Amazon ads.
But you also have access to hard-to-get information, such as the genre trend over time, how frequently you see new releases in that genre on average, and much more.
Don’t want to make the publishing decision in the dark and want to kiss those manual book research processes goodbye?
You can get Publisher Rocket right here and start getting the information you need in minutes:
Sign up with Publisher Rocket for lifetime access
Just to let you know, there’s a big chance they’ll be moving to the annual subscription any time soon.
If you ever thought about getting Publisher Rocket, I suggest that you get it as soon as you can, before the lifetime access disappears for good.
Edit your book according to the genre with ProWritingAid
It doesn’t matter whether you write fiction or nonfiction.
There’s no doubt the feedback you get needs to be based on what you write.
It’s hard to edit your work when the feedback you get is for those who write romance novels, when your book is in the sci-fi genre.
And it doesn’t have to be for the feedback on the overall book or chapter by chapter, either.
Even for something as simple as rephrasing needs to be tailored to your genre so that the rephrasing doesn’t sound as if it belongs to another genre.
As always, you can use Gemini or ChatGPT for rephrasing and manuscript analysis.
But if you want to do all this with a click of a button and in a more secure and private space, then ProWritingAid is the way to go.
And the best part of all?
It integrates with wherever you write your book.
Whether you write your book in Word as I do or you use fancy writing apps like Scrivener and Atticus, ProWritingAid is accessible in whichever app you use.
Heck, you can even use ProWritingAid in Notion and Discord, too.
Want to start making your writing appealing to the genre you write in?
You can sign up with ProWritingAid right here to get started:
Want to understand the genre better? Read books in that genre, of course

There’s no doubt the best way to understand the genre is to read books in that genre.
After all, writing will become so much easier when you know what kind of story will make them tick and what kind of story won’t.
So, how do you find the books you need to read in your genre, you ask?
Well, just ask Gemini or ChatGPT what books you can read in your genre.
They’re pretty good at giving recommendations, provided that you’re specific about the books you’re looking for.
And if you’re thinking about writing an anime-inspired story and looking for the books to read, then consider giving my books a try.
